Acne Skincare: Which Steps Are Optional?

Acne Skincare: Which Steps Are Optional?

Keep the routine gentle

Use a gentle cleanser and avoid scrubbing, cleansing brushes or repeated washing to remove every trace of oil. Do not pick or squeeze spots. Choose a moisturiser your skin tolerates rather than assuming acne-prone skin never needs one.

More steps are not necessarily better

A toner, exfoliating acid, mask or serum is not compulsory. There is no universal weekly exfoliation schedule for acne-prone skin. Adding several strong products or using them more frequently can irritate skin; follow the particular product's instructions and seek advice if you are unsure.

Read labels without expecting guarantees

Non-comedogenic products may be worth considering, but that label does not guarantee that everyone will tolerate them. Protect exposed skin with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, shade and clothing. A tan, extra water or a detox routine is not an acne treatment.

Know when skincare is not enough

Seek medical advice for persistent acne, deep or painful spots, scarring or significant distress. A worsening rash or persistent burning from a cosmetic product should not be treated as proof of progress. Everyday skincare supports comfort; it cannot promise clear skin or substitute for a prescribed plan.
