Blackheads and Acne: Gentle Care and Assessment

Blackheads and Acne: Gentle Care and Assessment

A dark pore is not proof of dirt

Blackheads are open comedones associated with acne. Their dark appearance is not simply dirt that needs scrubbing away. Not every dark dot or bump on the face is a blackhead, so uncertainty or a changing lesion should be assessed rather than squeezed.

Avoid forceful removal

Do not pick, squeeze or use improvised extraction tools. Harsh scrubbing and baking-soda pastes can irritate skin. Honey masks, clay or essential oils should not be promised to remove blackheads or prevent every recurrence.

Choose care for your skin

Gentle cleansing and tolerable skincare are useful everyday considerations. Non-comedogenic labelling does not guarantee that a product will suit everyone. Follow the directions for an actual product and ask a pharmacist about medicinal treatments rather than combining a list of ingredients yourself.

When to seek assessment

Persistent breakouts, painful or inflamed lesions, scarring or significant distress deserve medical advice. Cosmetic product selection does not confirm a diagnosis or make an extraction, peel or other procedure suitable. There is no universal exfoliation schedule or diet that guarantees blackhead-free skin.
