Closed comedones and whiteheads

What does “closed blackhead” mean?

The usual term is a closed comedone, often called a whitehead. Blackheads are open comedones. These terms describe different types of blocked follicles, so calling a whitehead a closed blackhead can be confusing.

Why do they form?

A comedone forms when material, including skin cells and oil, blocks a follicle. Some cosmetics can contribute to blocked follicles. This page cannot identify the cause of an individual skin concern.

Choosing skincare

Keep cleansing gentle and consider oil-free cosmetics. Do not squeeze bumps or use abrasive washing to try to remove them.

When to seek advice

If bumps persist or you are unsure what they are, seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional. Suitable care depends on an individual assessment.
