A concern about fullness below the chin needs an assessment of what is causing it. Local fat, skin laxity and other anatomical features are different issues. A device intended for selected submental fat is not automatically suitable for the cheeks, jowls or entire neck. Ask what exact area and applicator are proposed; a slimmer or lifted jawline is not guaranteed.

Discuss comfort and the local risks

Cooling and suction can be uncomfortable. Pain, swelling, altered sensation and other complications are possible, and treatment around this region can involve nerve or throat symptoms. A general promise of painless treatment or no recovery time is inappropriate. Ask how the practitioner will assess suitability and who can provide help afterwards; difficulty breathing or swallowing requires urgent medical help.

Risks of cryolipolysis

Controlled cooling can cause harm even though it does not require an incision. Possible problems include pain, bruising, swelling, altered sensation, cold burns and an uneven contour. A delayed firm enlargement of the treated area, called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, can occur instead of reduction and may require surgery; correction is not assured. Ask who will assess a complication and how follow-up is arranged. Choosing no treatment is an option.

Individual assessment and aftercare

An assessment should review the proposed area, skin and circulation, previous procedures, medical conditions and medicines. Cold-related disorders, poor circulation and a hernia or weakness near an abdominal treatment area can make cooling unsuitable. Tell the practitioner about pregnancy or breastfeeding. Follow the instructions for the actual device and your individual plan; do not stop prescribed medicines or add massage, compression or extreme cooling on the basis of a general article.
