Cyst and Pimple: Why the Difference Matters

Cyst and Pimple: Why the Difference Matters

Cyst and pimple describe different things

An epidermoid or pilar skin cyst is a lined sac containing keratin. Acne spots arise in a different setting and may be superficial or deep. A cyst is not simply a large pimple, and a deep spot is not automatically a removable skin cyst.

Appearance cannot settle it

Size, tenderness, colour or a visible head cannot reliably distinguish every lump. If it persists, changes or you are unsure, seek assessment. Do not assume a skin-cyst explanation applies to an ovarian cyst or a lump around a joint.

Care depends on what is found

A confirmed skin cyst and active acne need different decisions. Some cysts need no procedure, while persistent painful acne may need medical care. Do not squeeze either, borrow a prescription or follow a drainage tutorial. A list of medicines or procedures is not an individual treatment plan.

Avoid blame and cure promises

These concerns should not be treated as proof of poor hygiene. More scrubbing, extra water or a restrictive diet is not a guaranteed cure. Explain your existing skincare and what irritates it when seeking advice.

Changes that need advice

Seek medical advice for a growing, painful, hot, red or draining lump, or a sore that is not healing. Seek prompt care if symptoms worsen or you feel unwell. Do not wait for a cosmetic appointment or try to drain the area yourself.
