Female Hair Loss

Different changes can have different causes

Women may notice more shedding, a widening part, gradual thinning or patches. These observations do not identify a cause on their own. Inherited patterns, shedding after a significant event and other conditions can have different courses.

Prepare for an assessment

Note the timing, how the change has progressed and any scalp symptoms. Relevant health, medicine and life-change information can help a clinician decide what assessment is needed. Do not assume every change is hormonal, nutritional or caused by stress.

Care and appearance

Gentle handling can reduce additional damage to existing hair. Styling or camouflage may help you achieve a preferred appearance, but this does not establish that a cause has been treated or new hair has grown. Claims about supplements, oils or devices need evidence relevant to the actual concern.

Make room for support

Hair changes can be upsetting. You can discuss their impact and seek support as well as advice about the scalp. Management and the possibility of recovery depend on the cause; there is no universal promise of prevention or restored density.
