Ganglion Cyst: Assessment Before Considering Surgery

Different from a skin cyst

A ganglion is associated with a joint or tendon sheath, often in the hand or wrist. It is different from an epidermoid or pilar skin cyst. An unexplained lump needs assessment; this page does not establish that you have a ganglion or that Dr Sknn offers hand surgery.

A decision after diagnosis

A confirmed ganglion may not need treatment. Discuss pain, movement, grip and any change with an appropriate clinician. If surgery is proposed, ask about alternatives, recurrence, scarring, nerve symptoms, stiffness and recovery for the exact site.

No home drainage

Do not strike, puncture or attempt to remove a lump yourself. A generic operation or stitch-removal timetable cannot replace the plan from the treating team. Seek medical advice about an unexplained or worsening lump.
