Concern about a change in the lips

Filler migration is a possible complication of treatment, not a type of lip-enhancement procedure. If the lip border, shape or feel has changed, explain the concern and any symptoms to the treating practitioner. A lump or fuller area around the lips does not establish where filler is located or why the change happened.

What migration means

Filler migration means movement of filler material away from the injection site. It is a recognised possible complication, not an intended cosmetic benefit. A new lump, shadow, swelling or change in contour does not by itself confirm that filler has moved. The actual treatment history and a clinical assessment are needed to understand the concern.

Can the cause be identified from appearance?

An online description or photograph cannot establish why a change has happened. The assessing clinician needs to know the product used, where and when it was placed, any previous treatments and how the area has changed. Do not assume that normal talking, smiling, sleeping or an aftercare mistake caused migration. A particular filler brand, price, consistency or injection technique cannot guarantee that it will never occur.

Arrange an assessment of the actual change

Contact the treating practitioner and describe the location, timing and any symptoms. Bring the product record and aftercare instructions if available. Ask who can assess the concern, whether further medical assessment is needed and how follow-up will be arranged. A generic article cannot confirm that a clinic offers the required assessment or corrective treatment.

Avoid trying to move or dissolve filler yourself

Do not squeeze, massage, heat or inject the area to try to move filler back into place. Do not apply creams or take supplements as a filler-dissolving routine. Follow the individual aftercare you were given and ask for advice if it is unclear. The appropriate response depends on what assessment finds; complete removal or a return to the exact previous appearance may not be possible, and an intervention can carry its own risks.

Symptoms that need urgent help

Seek immediate medical attention for unusual or worsening pain, white, grey or blue skin near the injection site, or any change in vision after filler. Do not wait for a routine cosmetic appointment or try a home remedy. Breathing difficulty or rapidly developing swelling needs emergency medical help. These warning signs should not be dismissed as simply a cosmetic migration problem.
