Milium on an Eyelid: Assessment and Safe Choices
Milium on an Eyelid: Assessment and Safe Choices
What the term means
Milia are small keratin-containing cysts that can appear near the eyes. A pale eyelid bump is not necessarily a milium, so persistent, changing or uncertain bumps need appropriate assessment.
Protect the eye area
Do not puncture or squeeze an eyelid bump. Do not use peeling acids, freezing products, retinoids or an extraction tool around the eye on the basis of a general article. Advice for another part of the face is not an eyelid treatment plan.
Choices after confirmation
Confirmed milia may be left alone when they are not troublesome. If appearance concerns you, ask an appropriately qualified clinician whether treatment is suitable for the exact position and what its risks are. A general list of procedures does not show that each is appropriate near the eye.
Symptoms needing attention
An inflamed or painful eyelid bump should not simply be labelled harmless milia. Eye pain or a change in vision needs prompt medical assessment, rather than waiting for cosmetic care. For a child, seek age-appropriate advice and do not apply adult treatment suggestions.
