Scalp Cleansers and Everyday Hair Washing

What needs cleansing?

Shampoo is normally applied to the scalp to remove oil and product buildup, with the routine adapted to the hair and scalp. An extra product labelled scalp cleanser is not essential for everyone. Follow the directions for the formula you choose.

Avoid confusing cleansing with treatment

A cosmetic cleanser does not establish a treatment for psoriasis, eczema, scalp acne or hair loss. It should not promise faster growth or healthier follicles simply because it removes residue. Do not use a generic cosmetic routine instead of advice for a persistent scalp problem.

Keep the routine comfortable

Avoid forceful scratching and unnecessary exfoliation. Persistent itching, scaling, soreness or unexplained hair loss merits assessment. If you use a medicated shampoo or other treatment, follow its own instructions rather than a routine written for an ordinary cleanser.
